 Welcome Message from Barcelona

We are pleased to announce that the next European Congress on Tropical Medicine and International Health will be hosted in Barcelona, Spain, from 3 to 6 October 2011. This will be the 7th Congress organized under the auspices of the Federation of European Societies for Tropical Medicine and International Health (FESTMIH). Thirteen European countries are currently represented on the Federation Council by their respective Societies.

The Spanish Society of Tropical Medicine and International Health (SEMTSI), a young and growing society within the European context created in 1998, has delegated the organization of the congress to the Barcelona Centre for International Health Research (CRESIB, Hospital Clínic-Universitat de Barcelona) in collaboration with the Institute for Global Health of Barcelona (ISGlobal).

CRESIB is a research institute created by the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona, the University of Barcelona, the August Pi i Sunyer Institute of Biomedical Research (IDIBAPS) and the Catalan Government. It promotes International Health research and training as a major tool to improve the health of the most disadvantaged populations. The centre has on site collaborations with academic and research institutions in Europe, the Americas, the Maghreb, Sub-Saharan Africa, Asia and Oceania. Permanent partnership collaborations have been established in Mozambique, contributing to the development of the Manhiça Health Research Centre-Fundaçao Manhiça (CISM-FM); in Bolivia with the University Mayor de San Simon (Cochabamba), and in Morocco, where collaboration with the Ministry of Health on Maternal and Child Health programs has been ongoing for several years.

ISGlobal is a public private partnership for Global Health in Barcelona. Its founding members include the Spanish Government, the Catalan Government, “la Caixa” Foundation, the University of Barcelona and the Hospital Clínic of Barcelona. ISGlobal’s mission is to contribute to the global fight that aims to break the vicious circle of disease and poverty that affects the world’s most vulnerable populations by creating synergies between all global health actors, contributing to their activities and improving their quality and technical capacities, through its four key areas of activity: research (developed by CRESIB), think tank, training and technical cooperation.

Barcelona has a well deserved good name regarding Congress gatherings and venues, offering a variety of facilities: interesting sight-seeing, excellent gastronomy and lively avenues that should have participants as well as accompanying guests spend a most enjoyable time in Catalonia.

The congress will include traditional aspects of the Tropical Medicine seen through health research and patient care developed by European institutions and their partners. But this time the congress will place more emphasis on new concepts and practices on on which Global Health under the motto “Global Change, Migration and Health”. We believe that the surveillance and prevention of diseases in an era of migration and global change are issues on which the voice of the European Federation must be heard and this will be a unique opportunity for open debate, discussion and presentation of practical examples from which central global institutions of International Health could benefit. Moreover, during 2010 the EU Parliament and Council discussed a common policy and role to play regarding global health issues. Many of the aspects discussed and the conclusions reached during 2010 could thus be analysed in perspective during the Barcelona Congress.
